I’m heartbroken reading about Aaron Baten, the 17-year-old hiker who died near Battery Spencer in the Marin Headlands. I’ve hiked that trail before, it’s stunning, but it’s also incredibly steep and dangerous near the edges. It’s so easy to underestimate the risks when you're caught up in the beauty of the view.
Aaron was just about to start his senior year and had a job at Boichik Bagels. It’s devastating to think his life ended while doing something he loved. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and coworkers.
If you’re planning to hike anywhere in the Headlands or any coastal trail please be safe. Stay on marked paths, don’t go near cliffs, and always hike with a buddy if you can.
