I live in Japan and have traveled extensively across many prefectures and towns. Based on my personal experiences, I wanted to share a list of popular tourist destinations that I believe are either “worth visiting” or “not worth prioritizing.” This is intended as general advice for travelers, especially those visiting Japan for the first time.
Note: This is purely subjective. Others may have different experiences depending on timing, expectations, and travel style.
Touristy places that are worth visiting
Nikko (Tochigi Prefecture)
A well-known destination near Tokyo, popular with both locals and tourists. It offers a mix of scenic nature, including lakes and mountains, as well as onsen areas. It’s a great spot across all seasons, especially for those who enjoy outdoor landscapes and cultural sites.
Osaka Aquarium
Widely regarded as one of the top aquariums in Asia. It features impressive exhibits and a unique structure, making it a standout attraction in Osaka and highly recommended for visitors interested in marine life.
Shirakawago (Gifu Prefecture)
A famous historic village known for traditional gassho-zukuri houses. It offers beautiful scenery and cultural value. While popular, nearby alternatives with similar architecture exist that tend to be less crowded.
Itsukushima / Miyajima (Hiroshima Prefecture)
Known for the iconic floating torii gate. Beyond the main attraction, the island offers hiking trails, temples, and a quieter experience if you stay overnight. Visiting early morning or staying overnight helps avoid crowds.
Himeji Castle (Hyogo Prefecture)
Considered one of Japan’s most impressive and well-preserved castles. Its architecture and scale make it a top-tier historical attraction.
Hakone (Kanagawa Prefecture)
Famous for hot springs and ryokan stays. While accommodations can be expensive, the area also features attractions like the Hakone Open Air Museum and scenic surroundings that make it worthwhile.
Touristy places that are not worth prioritizing (or may disappoint)
Harajuku (Tokyo)
Once known for unique youth fashion culture, it is now often very crowded and filled with generic shops and tourist-oriented food spots. The original cultural appeal has diminished.
Akihabara (Tokyo)
Still relevant for anime, gaming, and tech culture, but can feel overcrowded and less practical for shopping. The experience may be more appealing for casual sightseeing than serious purchasing.
Kyoto (general caution)
Kyoto is culturally significant and absolutely worth visiting for many travelers, especially first-timers. However, it is extremely crowded at major sites. While it offers many temples and historic locations, similar experiences can be found in other less crowded regions. Visitor experience often depends heavily on expectations, timing, and planning.
Shirahama (Wakayama Prefecture)
Known for beaches and a fish market, but may feel underwhelming relative to its popularity. Crowds can be high, and the attractions may not justify the travel for some visitors.
Fukuoka (Fukuoka Prefecture)
While convenient as a transport hub, some travelers may find limited major attractions within the city itself. It may be more valuable as a gateway to explore broader Kyushu or nearby regions.

Japan offers many alternatives beyond the most famous tourist spots. Some highly popular destinations are worth visiting for their unique cultural or natural value, while others may be crowded or less impactful depending on your travel style. Exploring less-known regions can often provide a more relaxed and rewarding experience.
