Tourist etiquette in the Galapagos, what locals want visitors to know

The Galapagos are amazing but also fragile, and locals are getting frustrated with how some tourists behave. If you’re planning a visit, it’s worth keeping a few things in mind.

Stay at least two meters from wildlife at all times, even if they come up to you. No touching, feeding, or flash photos, especially around nesting birds. Always stick to marked trails going off can seriously damage plants that took decades to grow.

Take nothing, leave nothing. Even shells and rocks are off-limits. Use reef-safe sunscreen and bring a reusable bottle instead of plastic. Respect that these are real communities, not a theme park, and spend money at local spots.

And please, don’t argue with your guide about the rules. They’re there to protect what makes this place so special.
