My fiancée and I did the Coast Starlight from LA to Portland (about 30 hours) and it was a 10/10 experience. We upgraded to a roommette two chairs that turn into a bed with another bunk above. It’s pricey (7–9x coach), but for that long of a trip, having privacy and a real place to sleep was worth every penny.
The staff were great, meals in the dining car were surprisingly solid (three-course dinner with dessert), and the views were unreal. Bathrooms and showers stayed clean, beds were comfy, and the whole thing felt way more relaxing than flying.
