I had a confusing experience on a recent Lufthansa flight and wanted to share it.
I originally booked an economy ticket from San Francisco to Munich and briefly looked into upgrading through the app, but decided against it due to the cost and did not complete the payment.
Later, I noticed that my seat had changed to 5A with a business class label in the app, even though my boarding pass still showed economy. A couple of hours later, my Apple Wallet boarding pass updated to show business class as well.
At the airport, everything seemed to support the upgrade. I used priority lanes and even accessed the lounge, which made me think it might have been an operational upgrade.
However, at boarding, the gate agent called me up and after checking, told me the upgrade had not actually gone through since no payment was completed. My seat was reassigned back to 36C in economy.
Interestingly, both the app and boarding pass continued to show the business class seat, which added to the confusion. I was even told to check onboard, but ultimately the crew confirmed I needed to return to my assigned economy seat.
In the end, a flight attendant helped by giving me an empty row in the back, which made the situation better, although the business class seat remained empty.
Has anyone experienced something similar where the system shows an upgrade that was never actually confirmed?
