Background: I took the Amtrak Southwest Chief from Chicago to Albuquerque in April 2026 as a 30 year old solo female traveler. I have solo travel experience but this was my first time on a train. I tried researching beforehand, but some details like seat layout and comfort were hard to find.
Here are 10 things I wish I had known before my first Amtrak trip:
Bags and storage: I brought a carry-on suitcase, a large tote bag, and a small insulated lunch bag. The train has a lower level area for luggage and an upper level for seating. I stored my suitcase downstairs and kept essentials in the tote under the seat like on a plane. There is also overhead storage without doors.
Cabin essentials: Helpful items include a change of clothes, toothbrush, hair ties, eyeglass cloth, book light, cards or games, small crafts, and disinfecting wipes since cleanliness is not great. A neck pillow and sleep setup are also important.
Seats: The seats are more spacious than airplanes, with footrests and decent legroom. They recline but not enough for flat sleeping. Windows are large and have curtains. I mostly used the observation car instead of staying in my seat.
Sleeping experience: I recommend earplugs, eye mask, neck pillow, and a blanket setup. I still found sleeping uncomfortable in coach and woke up often due to positioning. Having a row to yourself helps, but comfort is limited.
Food and snacks: Train food is okay but not great, and can be pricey in the dining car. Bringing your own snacks or a small cooler is useful. Water refills are available, and hot water for tea is free.
Train layout: Coach cars are at the rear with luggage and bathrooms on the lower level. The observation car has seating with large windows and a cafe below it. There is also a dining car for more formal meals. Sleeper cars are further forward.
Bathrooms: They are small, older, and not very clean. They have running water but are not well maintained during the trip. Clothing choice matters for comfort.
Research route videos: Watching YouTube videos of your specific route helps set expectations and reduce anxiety.
Observation car: A social area where passengers often talk and connect. I met other travelers and shared experiences there.
Safety and staff: Staff and passengers were generally friendly and helpful, and I felt safe overall. Most people are relaxed and respectful.
Bonus: If someone makes you uncomfortable, speak to train staff. I had a situation with a passenger who made me uneasy, and staff were very supportive in moving me to a safer seating arrangement.
Pros: Relaxing experience, scenic views, social environment, felt safe, more environmentally friendly.
Cons: Limited cleanliness, uncomfortable sleeping in coach, small bathrooms, occasional bad smells.
Overall, I would travel by train again but would better prepare for overnight comfort.
