I’ve recently heard from a couple of travelers dealing with the classic “chair game” at luxury resorts. The situation is pretty frustrating, families head to the pool around 8:30–9:00 AM after breakfast, only to find every chair already “taken” with towels or personal items placed there much earlier, often around 6:00 AM.
What makes it worse is that many of the people reserving these chairs don’t actually show up until hours later, essentially blocking others from using them in the meantime.
This kind of behavior feels completely at odds with what a luxury experience should be. Instead of relaxing, guests end up dealing with stress, competition for space, and unnecessary tension around something as simple as finding a seat.
Ideally, hotels would manage this better by enforcing policies around unattended belongings, but enforcement seems inconsistent in many places.
For those who encounter this situation, what’s the best approach? Do you wait it out, ask staff to intervene, or just move the items and take the seat?
