Taxi wanted card instead of cash after we agreed on a cash price, scam or normal?

We don’t speak much Spanish. Took a taxi late at night, showed the driver our address, and he typed “800” on his phone calculator. We agreed to the price before moving.

He said something about “card” and we nodded and said in English that we could pay card or cash. No real clarity, but we got going.

When we arrived, I handed him 800 pesos in cash. He then pulled out a small blue card reader and kept saying “card.” I said I didn’t understand and pointed to the cash. He shook his head and pointed to his badge like he was trying to show he was legit. I gave him another 100 pesos and walked away. He accepted it and drove off.

Important clarification before this turns into the wrong debate: I’m not asking whether 800 MXN was expensive. We agreed to that price upfront and I was fine with it. That’s not the issue.

What I’m trying to understand is why he would refuse cash after agreeing to a price and push for card instead. Was this some kind of card related scam? Or is there a legit reason a driver would prefer or insist on card payment after the fact?

Curious if anyone’s run into this or knows what was going on.
