I have transited through Cancun Airport around 10 times, and in the past I’ve unfortunately been overcharged by taxi drivers, including a $200 card scam a few years ago.
Today I experienced a different kind of issue, which I assume is not new but was the first time I personally encountered it.
While moving from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3, I was approached by a taxi driver who asked where I was going. When I said T3, he gave me what sounded like “options”: he claimed I could wait about 30 minutes for a shuttle bus that supposedly goes through multiple stops including T1 and T4 and would take about an hour, or I could walk for around 40 minutes. He then offered a taxi for $20, saying it would take only 5 minutes.
Instead, I went to the free inter-terminal shuttle, which actually runs frequently. On the way, another person approached me and repeated almost the same story.
I find the issue isn’t just the pricing, but the misleading information being given to passengers in a way that seems helpful but is actually intended to push people toward paying for taxis.
I’ve lived in Mexico for several years and it’s frustrating that this kind of interaction can shape tourists’ impressions of the country. In the end, I walked to Terminal 3 myself and it only took about 7 minutes.
