Taking kids on Amtrak from DC to NYC, seating question

My kids really want to try a train trip, so we’re thinking about doing DC to NYC on Amtrak. It would be two parents and three kids (ages 6–10).

None of us have taken the train before, so I’m a little unsure how seating works.

Coach tickets are a lot cheaper, but since seats aren’t pre-assigned, I’m worried we might not be able to sit together. We’d be fine splitting up a bit like one parent with one or two kids but I’m not sure how realistic that is.

For anyone who’s done this route with kids:

Did you just book coach or pay extra to select seats?

Any tips to make the trip fun and smooth for younger kids?
