Sushi Zanmai Arrives in LA, Tuna King’s Epic Debut in Koreatown

Stopped by the grand opening of Sushi Zanmai in Koreatown and wow, it felt like a mini Tokyo moment right in LA. Kiyoshi Kimura, Japan’s legendary Tuna King, kicked things off by slicing up a 500-pound bluefin with a katana seriously, it was a scene. The vibe inside is low-key but sleek, with iPad ordering and a sushi bar that churns out pristine nigiri and chirashi bowls at record speed.

I tried the Tsukiji roll seared crab + shrimp tempura and the tuna chirashi both were excellent and fairly priced. Servers even shared the story of Kimura’s $2M tuna purchase like it’s already local folklore. If you’re into sushi and want a slice of Japanese market culture, this spot is a must. Anyone else gone yet? Curious which rolls or bowls stood out for you!
