I recently renewed my US passport online and was honestly surprised by how fast the process was.
I submitted my application last Friday evening and got the confirmation email at around 8:01 pm. To my surprise, the renewed passport was delivered today. That is roughly three business days plus overnight shipping, which feels incredibly quick.
Earlier this week, I checked my email a couple of times to see if the process had even started, since the system mentioned that applications usually begin processing within about two weeks.
