Stuck in AMS for days while Delta flies mostly empty planes

I’ve been stuck in Amsterdam for most of the week after multiple Delta cancellations. Weather was the trigger, but the real issue was de icing delays causing crews to time out. That happened on two flights in a row, then again late last night.

What really frustrated me was availability. On the phone, I could see plenty of open seats, including premium cabins, but agents either couldn’t see them or said they couldn’t move me. One supervisor even suggested I buy the ticket myself and hope for reimbursement, which I was not comfortable doing.

This morning I went to Schiphol and it was chaos. People sleeping everywhere, long lines for hotels. A check in agent there found me a seat on a direct flight in minutes, after a long hold with Delta. I got an aisle seat, nothing fancy.

Out of curiosity I checked the app. It showed over 170 open seats on that flight, including a lot in premium. Boarding is now complete and the plane is about one third full.

So either Delta’s systems are wildly inconsistent between agents and the app, or they are flying half empty planes while passengers sit in hotels for days. I’m not trying to pile on Delta, I live in MSP and usually like them. But something here feels very broken.
