Strange encounter on a beach in Cuba

My daughter and I were sitting on the beach when a guy came up with an empty water bottle and asked us to fill it with seawater. We did, and about 20 minutes later he came back, handed it to us again, and said it was a gift. I tossed it right away. Still not sure what that was about, just felt really weird.
