This is exactly why people get nervous booking Spirit.
Canceling for lack of crew the morning of a trip is bad enough. But telling you the next option is 3 days later, during a week long vacation, is basically no option at all. Especially with an 8 month old.
The part that really gets me is the meal voucher that expires before the next available Spirit flight. That just feels absurd.
From what I understand, if it’s a crew issue, they usually only owe a refund, not the cost difference on another airline. It’s brutal, but that’s how most US airlines handle it unless you’re covered by some special rule or travel insurance.
I’d definitely file a formal complaint through their website and maybe even DOT. Sometimes that at least gets a small goodwill credit. Credit card travel protections might also be worth checking if you booked with one.
Still, starting a vacation like that with a baby and a midnight arrival sounds exhausting. I’d be furious too.
