i recently had a frustrating and embarrassing experience flying southwest that i feel is worth sharing.
i am a passenger of size and have always followed airline policies by purchasing a second seat when needed. i’ve been flying for over 25 years and, across multiple airlines, have never been publicly singled out or questioned about my body or seating in this way.
on a recent flight from tampa to st. louis, after scanning my boarding pass at the gate, a gate agent stopped me and began asking if i was aware of the extra seat policy. i confirmed that i was and also stated clearly that i had already purchased two seats.
despite this, the agent continued to explain the policy in front of other passengers, effectively drawing attention to my situation. it felt unnecessary and humiliating, especially since i had already complied with all requirements.
this isn’t about debating policies or personal opinions. it’s about how those policies are enforced. there should be a more discreet and respectful way to handle situations like this, particularly when a passenger has already done exactly what is expected.
sharing this to see if others have had similar experiences and to raise awareness about how these interactions can be handled more appropriately.
