I am traveling with my family on Southwest Airlines using two separate reservations, one booked with points and the other paid. I selected seats for myself and my kids, leaving an adjacent seat still available.
When my wife checked in, she was automatically assigned a different seat closer to the front of the plane, even though there is an open seat next to us. After contacting customer service, I was told they could not move her to sit with us, despite the availability and the potential for them to resell her current seat.
This situation is frustrating since keeping family members seated together seems like a reasonable request, especially when seats are still open. I am trying to understand if this is standard policy or if there are any workarounds others have experienced.
