I want to warn others about a frustrating experience with Southwest Airlines’ flight credit policy.
I booked a flight for June 15 costing $529.80 and applied $40 in flight credits that were set to expire at the end of June. A few days later, I needed to change my flight to July.
As a long-time Southwest customer, I expected that the remaining amount paid with cash ($489.80) would be refunded as standard travel credit. However, I was informed that because I used a small amount of expiring flight credit during booking, the entire ticket—including the portion paid with new money—was now tied to the earliest expiration date and effectively unusable beyond that timeframe.
At no point during checkout was this consequence clearly explained.
Based on this, I would advise others to be very cautious when applying expiring flight credits to a booking. If your plans change, it may affect the validity of the full ticket value, not just the credit portion used.
