Southwest Airlines fliers resist checked bag fees

Southwest Airlines’ introduction of checked-bag fees has led to an increase in gate-checked carry-on luggage. Many passengers are using packing cubes and compression bags to avoid being forced to check items at the gate. Frustration is growing as travelers report being asked to gate-check bags even when overhead space is still available. Between January and March, Southwest mishandled over 119,000 bags, on par with other major U.S. carriers. Industry experts warn that new baggage policies may tarnish Southwest’s reputation for passenger-friendly service. While some passengers view gate-checking as a way to dodge fees, it increases risks of lost baggage and delays.
