Recent experience flying to and from Hawaii with Southwest Airlines using the “Choice Extra” fare.
The expectation was early boarding and extra legroom seating in Group 1, but despite being first in line, many passengers boarded before Group 1 was called. There was confusion about boarding order and signage, and priority seating bins were already filled before Group 1 boarded.
The fare included a complimentary premium beverage, but the options were limited to alcoholic drinks. WiFi performance was inconsistent, with streaming and messaging frequently freezing on the return flight. The included premium snack was only a small bag of pistachios.
Compared to premium economy on other airlines, the experience felt lacking, with no wider seats, no pillows or blankets, and minimal food improvements. Overall, the value of the upgraded fare was considered not worth the cost, aside from slightly more legroom benefits.
