Trying to wrap my head around this because it honestly freaks me out.
A completed stay suddenly showed up in my Expedia account for the Residence Inn Boston Burlington, Dec 30–31, 2025. I didn’t book it. I wasn’t in Boston. I wasn’t even in the US. I was in Brazil.
I contacted Expedia right away. They checked with the hotel and told me:
The guest checked in and out normally
The reservation was completed
The guest used my full name
The guest presented “valid ID”
The hotel claims no one could have checked in without valid identification
Payment was made with a Mastercard ending in 1125. Not mine. No family member booked anything.
So according to the hotel, someone walked in with an ID matching my name, stayed the night, and left, and now the system treats that person as me.
At this point I’m less worried about the money and more about how this is even possible. What kind of ID did they accept? How closely do hotels actually verify identity? Is this straight up identity theft or just incredibly weak check in procedures?
I’m documenting everything and escalating with Marriott, but if anyone has seen something like this before or knows how these cases usually end, I’d really appreciate hearing it. This is unsettling.
