Solo trip through Japan, Vietnam, and China. Totally different vibes.

Just got home after a few months solo in Asia and my brain still hasn’t caught up. I’m 23 and this was my first big solo trip that far from home, so everything hit harder.

Japan honestly ruined me in the best way. Tokyo and Kyoto just worked. Trains on time, people polite without being fake, never once felt unsafe even walking alone at night. Lived off convenience store food and had these small moments that stuck, like an older woman going out of her way to help me with a bus route even though we shared zero language. It felt easy to exist there.

Vietnam was the hardest, which surprised me. Nature was beautiful, but day to day travel felt draining. Aggressive selling, a couple scams, constant noise and chaos. Maybe wrong timing or bad planning on my part, but it wasn’t the magical experience I expected. Still glad I went, just not my favorite.

China completely blew my mind in a different way. Everything is massive and intense. Ultra modern cities next to ancient history, all moving at a speed that made me feel slightly behind at all times. Traveling solo without Mandarin was tough, but I felt incredibly safe. Clean, fascinating, unreal food, and just endless things to see. I couldn’t really connect with other travelers there, but the place itself was enough.

Overall, Asia really stuck with me. Even the harder moments had some kind of charm. It’s safe, affordable, full of history, and the food alone makes me want to go back
