Solo travel trip report covering Hong Kong and Macau.
Hong Kong has long been a desired destination due to its portrayal in 1990s cinema, and the trip was finally completed in late March.
The itinerary included 2 days in Macau and 4 days in Hong Kong.
In Macau, travel began directly from Hong Kong International Airport using a pre-booked direct bus service. Immigration was bypassed at the airport before boarding. Cash was withdrawn in Hong Kong dollars for local use, with most payments made by card where possible.
Macau was explored mainly by bus and walking, with frequent stops for food. Egg tarts were a major highlight, sampled from multiple well-known bakeries. Taipa, Senado Square, and Coloane village were visited, each offering distinct atmospheres ranging from busy commercial areas to quieter scenic spots. Pork chop buns were highlighted as a standout meal. Coffee was noted as expensive and difficult to find, and convenience stores were relied on for snacks and drinks. Navigation was improved using a dedicated bus app due to unreliable mapping services.
Travel continued by ferry to Hong Kong, followed by immigration and use of the MTR system. An Octopus card was purchased for transport and small payments.
Accommodation in Hong Kong was budget-focused but well-located with strong views. The city experience was described as fast-paced and crowded with a mix of Eastern and Western influences.
Food was a major highlight, including Michelin-listed restaurants as well as local street food. Beef brisket rice, egg tarts, pineapple buns, sausages wrapped in bacon, and mango-based desserts were particularly memorable. Convenience stores and supermarkets were frequently used for food and supplies.
Public transport apps helped with navigation across MRT, trams, and buses. Overall, the trip was described as safe, enjoyable, and highly memorable, with a strong emphasis on food experiences and urban exploration.
