Solo hiking revelation on the pacific crest trail that changed my perspective on trail community

This piece about Pacific Crest Trail hiking is worth a look as it brings back vivid memories of my own SOBO journey last summer. That particular morning in town started just like the one described - an early rise followed by a ritual stop at the local coffee shop for a bagel and coffee. What made it special was running into other thru-hikers there, all of us sharing the same agenda of hitting the post office before catching our shuttle back to the trail. It's amazing how these chance encounters become such meaningful moments on the PCT.

What I learned that day completely shifted my understanding of trail life. The way different hiking directions intersect - SOBOs and NOBOs crossing paths - creates this beautiful, ever-changing trail community. The weather was similarly perfect during my hike, with that characteristic PCT mix of warm sun and cooling breeze. Those storm clouds rolling in reminded me of how the trail teaches you to appreciate every clear moment while staying prepared for what's ahead. It's these shared experiences that make the PCT feel less like a trail and more like a living, breathing community of wanderers.
