Skipping room selection for better upgrades?

Just hit Diamond and was wondering how the whole upgrade thing works with digital check in. If I pick a room in the app, am I basically locking myself out of any chance at an upgrade? I usually stay at the lower tier brands so it’s not life changing, but I’m curious if it’s better to just leave it unselected and let the hotel assign something.
