Separate AA tickets for one trip feels sketchy but it’s usually fine

This comes up more than you’d think. Booking A to B on one ticket and B to C on another isn’t some rule breaking hack by itself, especially if an agent did it because the system was throwing errors.

As long as you’re not doing hidden city stuff or intentionally bypassing fare rules, AA isn’t going to ding your account just because the itinerary is split. People do this all the time with positioning flights or award + cash combos.

The real risk isn’t rule violations, it’s protection. If A to B is late and you miss B to C, AA doesn’t owe you anything on that second ticket. No rebooking, no help. With no checked bags it’s less painful, but still something to be aware of.

From a loyalty standpoint, this shouldn’t affect your account at all.
