During boarding for an American Airlines flight, I was instructed by the gate agent to check my carry-on bag due to limited overhead space. While waiting in line with other passengers to have bags tagged, I informed the agent that I needed to retrieve medication from my bag.
I stepped away briefly, opened my bag to get the medication, and returned to the gate within a short time. However, when I returned, I was informed that my seat had already been given away. The staff indicated that the situation was my responsibility, despite my understanding that I was following their instructions.
I was part of a later boarding group, which may have contributed to the situation, but I am unsure how my seat was reassigned while I was still present at the gate. I would like to understand what options are available in such cases and whether there are any policies or recourse for passengers in this situation.
