I’m flying Southwest for the first time since the seat assignment changes and ran into something confusing. I booked for 2 adults and 1 lap infant, and whenever I move our seats on a mostly empty flight, the third seat in our row immediately shows as occupied right after the change.
I tested this a few times just to be sure, and it keeps happening. It almost feels like the system is automatically assigning a solo traveler to fill our row, but there are still other rows with only one or two occupied seats—so I’m not sure why it keeps happening specifically with ours.
Part of me wonders if the system is blocking that third seat because of the lap infant, but I’m not confident that’s the case.
Has anyone experienced this or know how Southwest’s seat assignment logic works in situations like this?
