I was on a flight from Houston to San Antonio today, and just as we were about to push back from the gate, the captain announced that we needed to reopen the aircraft door because a kidney being transported from another flight was on its way.
I had no idea that donated organs are sometimes carried in the passenger cabin on commercial flights. The transport container, a KidneyVault, was secured in its own seat with a seatbelt. It was surprisingly noisy during the flight, but it was incredible knowing that something so important was onboard, potentially helping save someone's life.
It was definitely one of the most memorable things I've seen while flying.
