I recently traveled on an overnight train with Amtrak and saw something unusual.
A passenger got into the empty luggage rack area and slept there during the trip. I could not decide if this was a clever solution or just uncomfortable and inappropriate.
The context: I was also struggling to find space because the conductor would not allow me to sit in an empty row, saying those seats might be taken later. I ended up squeezed next to a large passenger in a narrow aisle seat.
Seeing someone use the luggage rack for sleep made me question the rules and what is actually acceptable on overnight rail travel.
Is this something people commonly do on long distance trains, or is it just risky and against policy?
