SAS upgrades as Diamond, do they ever clear automatically?

Diamond member here, mostly Europe flying with a couple US trips per year.

Last week I flew to Newark and bid the minimum for an upgrade to Premium. It cleared. When I boarded, I noticed quite a few empty seats in Premium.

So now I’m wondering:

Would SAS ever automatically upgrade a Diamond if seats remain empty? Or do they generally prefer to fly Premium and Business seats empty rather than give complimentary upgrades?

I’ve been Diamond for three years and have never received an automatic upgrade within Europe.

Curious what others have experienced. Is bidding basically the only realistic path, even at the top tier?
