San Diego International Airport introduced an onsite live poetry program aimed at engaging passengers through spontaneous artistic exchanges. Running through April 2025, the initiative featured local nonprofit Poets Underground who collected travelers' stories and transformed them into original poems.
The project, titled The Great Poetic Baggage Exchange, is part of SAN's Performing Arts Residency Program. Positioned at a luggage-themed installation, the poets invited passengers to share experiences related to five themes (adventure, baggage, connection, checkpoint and rise). Passengers received their poems in written, spoken or visual form, with select pieces performed live during May.
According to SAN , the residency is part of a broader effort to incorporate local arts into the travel experience while promoting community storytelling and engagement.
