Just noticed something new while booking a Ryanair flight from Malaga to the UK.
At checkout they automatically apply their own currency conversion if your card currency doesn’t match the flight currency. The wording makes it sound like you should accept their “guaranteed rate”, but the numbers tell a different story.
In my case the price was €669, which should be roughly £579 at current rates. Ryanair’s conversion came out closer to £614.
So you’re basically paying around £35 extra just to use their conversion.
Dynamic currency conversion has been popping up everywhere lately, but it’s almost always worse than letting your card provider handle the exchange.
Just something to watch for if you’re booking with a different currency.
