Rookie question: is it common to decide to “opt-out” of getting off at a port and just take a ship day?

I’m taking my first ever cruise next year to the Bahamas, with a stop in Key West, and I’m unsure if I want to get off there or just stay on the ship.

Is it normal for passengers to skip a port day entirely? Or do most people usually disembark and explore? I’m trying to understand cruise culture and what people typically do.

I’ve heard mixed advice, but I’m leaning toward maybe making Nassau a “ship day” and exploring Key West instead.
