We recently sailed on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Luminara from Hong Kong to Japan (March 2026). While the suite was beautiful and the onboard staff were consistently professional and attentive, the overall experience did not meet expectations given the high cost.
On the positive side, the accommodations were well-designed, and the crew worked hard to provide good service.
However, several aspects fell short:
Dining & onboard experience:
Dining options were limited, with usually only a couple of restaurants open and minimal menu variation over multiple days. This made the experience feel repetitive, and onboard activities were also limited for a luxury cruise.
Excursions:
The shore excursions were particularly disappointing. They were expensive but often poorly organized and lacking in quality. One example was a Seoul “K-beauty” experience that was heavily marketed but did not deliver as advertised. It included substandard facilities, missing services, and poor guidance, leaving participants without proper support at times. The operator later acknowledged issues and removed the excursion, but the experience itself was already compromised.
Other excursions in ports like Shanghai, Nagasaki, and Kobe were also underwhelming, with limited depth, weak coordination, and pricing that didn’t reflect the value provided.
Overall impression:
The cruise felt like a product still being refined rather than a fully polished luxury offering. While the ship and staff were strong points, there appears to be inconsistent quality control, particularly with third-party excursions.
Advice:
Future travelers should independently research and vet excursions rather than relying solely on the cruise offerings, and set realistic expectations about the overall experience.
