I stayed at Rissai Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve property in Jiuzhaigou, last year to celebrate my engagement, and I have been meaning to share a detailed review since there is limited English-language information about it. Overall, it was an exceptional stay in a remarkable location, and I would highly recommend it for travelers visiting China, especially considering the value for the level of luxury offered.
A few important notes upfront: I speak fluent Chinese and regularly use WeChat, which was the primary way I communicated with hotel staff. While I cannot fully assess English-language support, I believe communication would still be manageable due to modern translation tools.
I booked a two-bedroom reserve villa for two nights under a promotional package priced around $2,000 USD per night. This rate, available through Marriott Bonvoy, was close to standard pricing but included extensive benefits such as airport transfers, transport to Jiuzhai National Park, flexible check-in and check-out, butler service, daily breakfast, set dinners, drinks, and other curated experiences.
The journey to the property involves traveling to a remote region near Jiuzhaigou, now more accessible thanks to high-speed rail. From the train station, we had a luxury vehicle transfer that took around 1.5 hours to reach the resort.
The villa itself was stunning, with a Tibetan-inspired design that blends into the surrounding landscape. It featured a large living space, private terrace with panoramic views, fireplace, telescope setup for stargazing, and complete privacy. The accommodation also included spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, plus a fully stocked kitchen with discreet service access.
Service was a major highlight. Staff coordinated everything through WeChat in real time, allowing for seamless communication and itinerary planning. Despite expectations that Chinese luxury hospitality may differ from Western standards, the service here exceeded expectations and felt highly personalized and efficient. A memorable example included staff going out of their way to accommodate wine service and later returning a resealed bottle along with an additional complimentary bottle and a personal note.
Dining was included in the package and consisted of hotpot and a Chinese tasting menu for dinner, as well as a buffet and à la carte breakfast with both Western and local Tibetan options. The quality was consistently strong given the remote location.
The resort also offered a wide range of activities and amenities, including indoor and outdoor recreation, cultural activities, a large pool with mountain views, spa facilities, and wellness options. There was no shortage of things to do on property.
Overall, this was a highly memorable luxury stay in a remote but breathtaking location. The combination of scenery, service, and value made it stand out as one of the best resort experiences I have had, and I would strongly recommend it for anyone traveling through the region.
