Removed from my seat, told to pay $89 to get back on, bag damaged… what is going on Southwest?

I used to love Southwest. Had ALP at one point. Today was rough.

Booked weeks ago through work. Assigned seat row 17, boarding group 4. This morning I get an app alert saying my seat is gone and I’m now standby. But hey, I can “secure” a seat for $89.

At my layover they say the flight is overbooked and again offer me an extra legroom seat for $89. I said no thanks, I’ll take the 400% DOT comp since the next flight gets me home 5 hours later.

Suddenly a seat appears. Middle seat, row 30. Boarding group 8.

No overhead space left. I told them I had a medical device in my bag and would need it shortly after landing. Choice was check it or don’t fly. So I checked it.

Flight delayed. Bags took another hour. I was already pushing the timing on the device. Then I get home and the suitcase is damaged beyond use.

Customer service response? Drive 90 minutes back to the airport immediately or too bad. For anything else, file with the DOT.

One issue I could maybe shrug off. All of this together just feels bad.

Has anyone else had weird “pay to get back on your own flight” stuff happen lately?
