I’ve been to Mendenhall Glacier before, and it’s surreal to think the same peaceful spot is now seeing record-breaking floods. Suicide Basin, the side basin above Juneau, has burst again, this time pushing the Mendenhall River past its previous record from 2024. Residents in flood zones have been told to evacuate immediately, with officials warning it could become life-threatening.
This isn’t the first time it’s happened, but the scale this year sounds worse. Last time I visited, locals told me glacial floods are becoming an annual event because of climate change and the glacier’s retreat. Seeing such a beautiful place under threat is heartbreaking. Anyone here in Juneau right now? How bad is it on the ground?
