I recently visited Athens with three generations of family and spent seven days exploring the city at a relaxed pace. Traveling in mid April meant crowds were manageable, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
One of the key highlights was the Acropolis. Arriving early and booking tickets in advance is essential. The climb is manageable if taken slowly, but mobility options like the elevator may not always be available. Also, facilities like water and restrooms are only at the base, not at the top.
Walking around Athens requires good footwear since many surfaces are uneven or slippery due to marble and stone. Taking your time navigating the city makes a big difference.
A day trip to Aegina was a standout experience. Visiting sites like the Temple of Aphaia requires transportation, as walking is not practical. The island also has a lively port and great local food, especially pistachio products.
We also visited the Temple of Poseidon with a driver and guide, including stops at beaches and Lake Vouliagmeni. It is worth noting that the temple may close for renovations in the future, so checking ahead is important.
Museums were another highlight, including the Benaki Museum, Acropolis Museum, National Archaeological Museum, and the Goulandris Foundation, which stood out for its contemporary collection.
Other memorable spots included the Panathenaic Stadium, the Ancient Agora of Athens, and the National Garden. Watching the changing of the guard at the Parliament with the Evzones was also a unique cultural experience.
We stayed at the Hotel Grande Bretagne, which offered incredible rooftop views, and also dined at Dionysus Zonar's near the Acropolis. Exploring neighborhoods like Plaka added to the charm of the trip.
Overall, spending a full week in Athens allowed us to explore at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed. While it is possible to see the highlights in fewer days, taking extra time made the experience far more rewarding.
