Rabies Emergency in New York? What Travelers Should Know Before Visiting

I was planning a late summer trip to New York when I came across some surprising news: the state has declared a public health emergency due to a sudden spike in rabies cases. Nassau County alone has seen 25 animal cases this month the first outbreak in nearly a decade. With additional reports from Suffolk County and warnings from the CDC, it’s clear this isn't just a minor uptick. Wild animals like raccoons, bats, and feral cats are the primary carriers, but domestic animals can be infected too if unvaccinated. Definitely makes you rethink a casual nature stroll or encounter with wildlife.

Now I’m wondering if I should adjust my plans. Would you still visit New York with this going on, or just take extra precautions? Anyone from the area have insights on how serious it feels on the ground?
