I am planning to check in a box at GLA tomorrow for a flight to Malaga. I will remove the carrying strap before checking it in.
The box contains a framed painting and measures 87 cm wide, 71 cm tall, and 14 cm deep. The weight is 6 kg.
Ryanair’s maximum checked baggage size is 80 × 120 × 120 cm, so based on overall limits it should technically fit, although the chatbot is saying it exceeds the width allowance and may require special handling.
Right now I can purchase a 10 kg checked bag for £36, but it specifically refers to a wheelie suitcase, not a box. In the past, I have checked a smaller box and simply paid for a standard checked bag online, then dealt with it at the airport without additional fees.
I am unsure what the correct approach is here. Should I:
Buy the 10 kg checked bag allowance now and present the box at check-in expecting it to be processed normally or redirected, or
Not pre-book anything and go straight to special handling and pay whatever fee applies at the airport?
I cannot reach a real agent through customer support, so any advice from people with experience checking non-standard items would be appreciated.
