Saw a story from someone who got stuck in Sri Lanka during the recent Middle East disruptions and shared how Qatar Airways handled their case.
Their original itinerary was Colombo → Doha → Helsinki. When the conflict started affecting flights, they contacted Qatar six days before departure asking for rerouting options since flights were quickly disappearing.
According to them, Qatar’s support kept saying they couldn’t reroute them yet and told them to wait until 0–1 days before departure to see what options might be available. They pushed for alternatives through other airlines earlier but were told it wasn’t possible.
Because they were worried about flights selling out, they eventually bought new tickets themselves and planned to deal with insurance later.
Then, less than 24 hours before their original flight, they contacted Qatar again just to see what would have happened if they had waited. The answer: no rerouting options available, only rebooking within ±14 days or a refund.
Their point was that if they had followed Qatar’s advice, they would now be stuck waiting weeks for flights home unless they paid extremely high prices.
