Put on standby for tomorrow’s MCO flight… after checking in

Party of 4 flying out of MCO tomorrow and after checking in we were suddenly put on the standby list. I called Southwest to clarify, especially with the new seating policy, and the rep said “there are seats on the plane, but basic is sold out.”

That part confused me since we paid for basic fare. They said we’ll be assigned whatever seats are available at the gate tomorrow. I asked where this policy is written and they couldn’t point me to anything.

Normally I wouldn’t stress too much, but with all the recent Southwest issues people have been posting about, I’m uneasy. We’re here for a conference and this is the last flight home for the night. Not thrilled about showing up just to potentially get bumped and end up stuck in Orlando overnight.

There are 4 people ahead of us on the standby list. I tried upgrading or even rebooking outright, but every seat option shows unavailable. My supervisors think we should just roll the dice and go to the airport, and I feel like I’m the only one worried.

Am I overthinking this, or is this actually something to be concerned about?
