Finally had one of those “this is why you hoard points” moments. NYC this weekend, totally forgot how insane holiday pricing gets. Midtown hotels were going for 1,000–1,400 a night. Found a room at 1,400 cash or 120k points. I only had 46k, so I bought 40k during the 100% bonus promo, 400 bucks for 80k points.
Combined that with what I had and covered the whole stay.
Out of pocket: $400
Cash rate: $1,400
Savings: $1,000
Value: roughly 1.2¢ per point
Cost to buy: 0.5¢ per point
First time buying points actually felt like a win.
Also first Kimpton stay for me I usually do InterContinental but still get IC elite perks. Curious if people like Kimpton overall and what that “life of a Kimpton guest” line actually gets you at check-in.
And yeah, now I’m wondering how 1.2¢ stacks up to other big IHG redemption wins.
