PSA from a gate agent: please stay off your phone on the tarmac

Gate agent here. I’m the guy in the hi vis vest who has to yell at people while they’re walking across the tarmac to board. I promise I’m not doing it to be a jerk.

When I say tarmac, I mean the situations where you walk outside and up stairs to the plane, not jet bridges.

The real issue isn’t phones blowing up fuel or anything dramatic like that. It’s that when people are on their phones, they stop paying attention. And the apron is a genuinely dangerous place. Big machines, moving aircraft, uneven ground, ropes, stairs. All of it can hurt you if you’re distracted.

I’ve seen people trip over cones, ropes, stairs, and their own feet. I’ve had to stop people from ducking under the wing, wandering toward taxiways, or walking off in random directions to get a selfie. This happens way more than you’d think.

Every distracted passenger becomes a liability, and if I’m busy babysitting one person, I’m not watching the other 40 or 50 people who could also do something dumb at the same time.

I get it, being out there is exciting. I’m an avgeek too. One quick discreet photo and then phone away? Fine. Waving your phone around, filming, arguing when asked to stop? That’s the problem.

You’ll survive without your phone for the minute it takes to board. It makes things safer and way less awkward for everyone.

Thanks for listening.
