Just posting this because it caused a huge headache for friends of ours during the recent snowstorm mess.
The Delta SkyMiles Platinum Amex is not the same as the regular Amex Platinum when it comes to travel insurance. It does not have the same trip cancellation/interruption coverage. The Delta card only covers up to $300 per trip.
Our friends booked about $7k in flights and hotels thinking they’d have the $10k level coverage that comes with the actual Amex Platinum. Someone in the family had the real Amex Platinum and assumed the Delta “Platinum” would be similar since they’re both Amex and both say Platinum.
They spent 3 hours on the phone with Delta and even Amex concierge couldn’t clearly explain the coverage amount at first.
Seems obvious in hindsight, but in the middle of canceled flights and chaos it’s easy to assume the benefits are the same.
Just a heads up so no one else makes the same expensive mistake.
