Please don’t take disabled seating if you don’t need it

Coming back from a weekend in Chicago and honestly just frustrated. My partner and I are both disabled and use mobility aids. We booked disabled tickets for our return from Glenview to Milwaukee.

When we boarded, the disabled seating area was basically full. No space for us to sit together, and no room to store our mobility aids. No one was willing to move, and the conductor just shrugged and said there was no other space.

It got worse. This train was a double decker, so we couldn’t use the stairs. I ended up seated way in the back next to a stranger having a panic attack, and my partner was sitting on the floor at the front of the car with our luggage. This is after paying specifically for accessible seating.

This isn’t the first time it’s happened on this route when a double decker shows up. You don’t find out the train type in advance, so you can’t plan around it.

I’m trying to complain to Amtrak because I know this will cause my partner a flare up for days. At this point we may just have to board at Union Station every time to avoid this, which shouldn’t be the solution.

If you’re not disabled, please don’t take those seats. Some of us really need them.
