Just wrapped up a Portland to São Paulo trip that ended up being way cheaper than booking a simple round trip. Watched Frontier’s promos and grabbed PDX MIA for 5000 points with an 8 hour DEN layover we turned into a nice dinner off the light rail. Then 12 hours in Miami with Cuban sandwiches and a rooftop pool day room.
Found AA round trips MIA GRU for about $400 and spent 10 great days in Brazil. Coming back, used Go Wild from MIA to DEN, crashed overnight, then Go Wild again back to Portland. Free checked bag thanks to Gold helped too.
It took more planning and some long layovers, but we saved about $1100 each doing it this way. Honestly the best value has been using Frontier to get to international hubs and then jumping on cheap long hauls.
Safe flying!
