Lisbon is unusual for a capital city in that it has access to four distinct beach coastlines, all within about an hour of the city center, each offering a different type of experience.
For easy access, the Cascais and Estoril coastline is the most convenient option, connected directly by train and featuring several sandy, calm beaches such as Carcavelos, Oeiras, Tamariz, and Conceição. These are well-equipped with facilities and lifeguards, but can become very crowded in peak summer.
Across the river, Costa da Caparica offers a long stretch of Atlantic coastline popular for surfing and beach bars, with a more social and energetic atmosphere. However, it is exposed to strong winds, making conditions less comfortable on breezy days.
Further west in the Sintra area, beaches like Guincho, Ursa, and Adraga are more dramatic and scenic, with cliffs and natural landscapes, but they are harder to reach and often require a car and some hiking.
To the south, the Serra da Arrábida region features some of the most picturesque beaches, with calm turquoise waters and green hills, though parking is limited and it can become overcrowded in summer.
Overall, each coastline suits a different type of beach day, depending on whether you prioritize convenience, scenery, surfing, or quiet natural beauty.
