Oversold flights – how it works

I’m currently boarding a flight and noticed that a few passengers have been asked to wait because there may not be enough seats available.

I’m trying to understand how this situation works:

Does this happen more frequently on short-haul flights where no-shows are more common?

Are passengers aware that airlines may oversell tickets, or is this just part of standard practice?

If someone is denied boarding due to overselling, is compensation typically provided?

I’m just looking to better understand the reasoning and process behind overselling flights
